Electrical activity of brain in endosulfan toxicity |

The electrical activity of brain was studied in anaesthetized cats after intravenous administration of endosulfan. The pesticide produced indistinguishable changes such as hypersynchrony, rhythmic bursts of spikes and waves of isolated seizure pattern in electrocorticogram (ECoG). The concentration of the compound was maximum in cerebral cortex as compared to other areas of the brain which corresponds to the seizure pattern in ECoG. Records of blood pressure showed immediate hypotension which was followed by a persistent hypertension. Studies were also extended to spinal sectioned cats. Acetylcholine was depleted for up to 2 hours without any change in acetylcho linesterase activity.

Study on the pharmacological actions of methanolic extract of the whole root of Morus indica was undertaken. It was found to possess CNS depressant, analgesic and significant local anaesthetic actions. The extract also significantly reduced carrageenin-induced oedema in rats.

Effect of some beta blocking agents on anti-inflammatory action of oxyphenbutazone and dexamethasone on carrageenin induced paw edema in rats |

Using carrageenin induced edema in rat left hind paw as a model for inflammation, the effect of beta adrenergic blocking agents on the anti-inflammatory activity of oxyphenbutazone and dexamethasone was studied. The anti-inflammatory activity was counteracted by beta blocking agents. 'This action is discussed in relation to carbohydrate metabolism.

A study on the penicillamine induced gastric ulceration in the rat |

Penicillamine. which is being used as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis was found to be a potential ulcerogenic agent, as feeding the rats with penicillamine daily for six consecutive days (7.5 and 15.0 mg/kg/day) induced significant gastric ulceration. The induced ulcers could be attributed to the increased acidity of gastric juice. Histaminergic (H1 and H2) receptors appeared to be involved in the penicillamine induced ulcerations in rats.

2'- (6- Sulphonyl- 6H- 7- methyl- S-oXo- 4H- 2,3- dihydro-1, 4- diazepino)-2, 5- dimethyl-6, 7- benzomorphan (I) was obtained in three steps (i) chlorosulphonation of 2, 5-dimethyl-6, 7-benzomorphan (Ia) to 2' chlorosulphonyl-2, 5-dimethyl-6, 7-benzomorphan (Ib) (ii) followed with the candensotion of Ib with the sodium salt of ethylacetoacetate giving an intermediate Ic with (iii) subsequent reaction of Ic with ethylenediamine. It was found to possess low toxicity, significant antidepressant and analgesic activities.

Antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory activity of carrageenan from Hypnea musciformis wulfen |

Pharmacological studies on K-carrageenan extracted from Hypnea musciformis have shown that it antagonizes histamine-induced spasm in guineapig ielum and possesses anti-inflammatory activity against rat hind paw oedema induced by commercial carrageenan. There is no significant effect on blood pressure and respiration.

Absorption and fate of iodine in 131I-soluidine and Na131I solution following application to intact human skin |

Absorption and fate of iodine in 131I-Soluidine and Na131I was determined by radioactivity measurements using body segment counter after applying the respective solution to the intact abdominal skin of healthy human volunteers. In 6 days iodine absorption from 131I-Soluidine solution was 16%. Very small quantity i.e. less than 3%, was taken up by thyroid. Rest is eliminated from the body. Thyroidal concentration of iodine was insignificant. Soluidine solution was nonstaining, non-irritant and no adverse reactions were observed.
