Professor JS Bapna, MD, PhD, FAMS (12th May 1942 to 1st Nov 2021) Professor Emeritus SMS Medical College, Jaipur passed away on 1st Nov 2021. Dr Bapna was a senior Pharmacologist who served at many institutions with great distinction and helped to establish the Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology disciplines. He started his academic career as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology of his Alma mater ie; SMS Medical College Jaipur way back in 1967-68. Most of his 40 years of academic career was in New Delhi, first with the newly created University College of Medical Sciences New Delhi in 1974 and from then he took over as Professor and Head of the Department at JIPMER Pondichery. After serving there for a decade he moved back to Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi as Director Professor and Medical Superintendent of GTB hospital. Subsequently Dr Bapna became the Director of Institute of Human Behaviour & Neurosciences.
His initial training in Neuro-psychopharmacology with his mentor Professor P.C. Dandiya (with whom he cherished 57 years of long association) Professor Bapna got prestigious international NIMH fellowship at the National Institute Mental Health (NIMH), Washington DC and subsequently at various American and European Universities including the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden. In later years he was deeply involved with the Delhi Society for promotion of Rational Use of Medicines and in the preparations of the 1st list of Essential Drugs for the NCR hospitals. He also wrote a book on 'Guide to Good Prescribing' for WHO. He had published more than 150 research papers, 10 books and guided many students for MD and PhD degrees. He was elected as the President of Indian Pharmacological Society and as the President of Professor Prem Chand Dandiya Endowment Trust and served for nearly 30 years. He has co-authored along with his mentor (Prof PCD) a very popular book on 'The Complet Family Medicine' which is in its 12th edition and has sold more than one million copies. Married to Mrs Usha Bapna and they have a son Dr Ravi Bapna who occupies a Chair in Management Sciences in the USA, Dr JS Bapna a very soft spoken and down to earth committed scientist left behind a void in Pharmacological & Medical Fraternity of Jaipur and a large friends and admirers nationally. May his soul rest in peace!
