Dr Manindra Nath Ghosh, an illustrious pharmacologist of our times passed away at the age of 97 years, in his Kolkata residence on the 28th October, 2021. He is survived by his three daughters and an army of research scientists in pharmacology who trained with him.

Born with a familial legacy of serving the discipline of pharmacology – his father, Dr Birendra Nath Ghosh was the author of “Dr B N Ghosh's Textbook of Pharmacology and Therapeutics”, and his grandfather, Dr Rakhaldas Ghosh had authored and edited “R Ghosh's Pharmacology, Materia Medica and Therapeutics”, Dr M N Ghosh also chose to become a pharmacologist.

Dr Ghosh graduated in Medicine from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata in 1948. He later pursued his PhD in Pharmacology at University of London where he worked with Prof H O Schild to develop the method of continuous pH monitoring of gastric secretions in rats – referred to as the famous Schild and Ghosh's method.

On his return from London, he joined as the professor and head of pharmacology at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (JIPMER) in 1963. His tireless effort and contributions shaped and raised the department as a centre par excellence, of postgraduate training and education in pharmacology in India.

In the year 1977 Dr Ghosh became the Principal of JIPMER, and later he served as the first Director of the institute from July 1978 to July 1982. After retirement from JIPMER in 1982 he joined Indian Institute of Chemical Biology as a consultant in pharmacological research.

He was the recipient of the prestigious Dr B C Roy award. He was also the Fellow of National Academy of Medical Science. As a teacher he was known for his caring smile and kind words as well as his keen vigil and stern watch. His able guidance and mentorship provided the all-needed support to a vast number of research scholars in building their professional career. His scholarly stature earned him great respect from in the pharmacological fraternity in the country and abroad. He was elected the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Pharmacology during 1978-1980. Later in 1982 he became the President of Indian Pharmacological Society 1982.

Dr M N Ghosh had rich contributions in the field of experimental pharmacology and drug research methods. He was the author of an wonderful book on the subject of experimental pharmacology, “Fundamentals of Experimental Pharmacology” that has been extremely useful to young researchers and postgraduate scholars in pharmacology for more than five decades, ever since the first edition published in 1970.

Dr M N Ghosh has been cordially endeared by his innumerable students, and he shall be fondly remembered by one and all whosoever came in touch with him.
