Dr. Om Datt Gulati, a doyen of Pharmacology in India and a past-President of Indian Pharmacological Society, left for his heavenly abode on 23.2.2012.
An M.B.B.S. from Madras University, M.D. (Pharmacology) from Agra University, and MS from the University of Colorado (USA), Dr. Gulati, for most of his life worked at Medical College, Baroda (Gujarat), in various capacities until his superannuation in 1985 as its Dean. Subsequently, he also worked as Dean, PS Medical College, Karamsad, and as a Director/Consultant of the Ambalal Sarabhai Enterprise, Baroda.
Professor Gulati pioneered the subject of autonomic pharmacology and guided a large number of students toward their M.D., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology. A teacher par excellence, his research interests extended to several areas from indigenous drugs to clinical pharmacology. Dr. Gulati has 135 publications to his credit mostly in reputed international journals. He delivered scores of lectures and orations at several conferences and academic meetings. His meritorious research earned him numerous prizes, awards, and felicitations. A few of them include Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1971), Shriram Gold Medal NAMS (1973), Shri Amrut Modi Research Foundation Award (1978), Uvunas Prize IPS, and Dr. B C Roy award (1981).
Professor Gulati was a well-read person and he kept himself fully updated with most of the recent advances. A man of few words and lots of action, he was associated in various capacities with various national and international organizations, e.g., NAMS, CSIR, MCI, ICMR, and Indian Institute of Chemical Biology. Being one of the founder members of the Indian Pharmacological Society, he visited University of Colorado as a TCM fellow, University of Edinburgh as a WHO fellow, and William S Hall Psychiatric Institute, Columbia, as a teaching research scientist. A few months before his death, he attended the inauguration of permanent headquarter of IPS at Ahmedabad.
An astute teacher, a great scientist, an able administrator, a great human being, a hard task master, and yet always prepared to provide comfort and solace to others, if needed, that is how one can best describe the late Professor Gulati. We are poorer today with his loss but wish that his spirit remains eternal to guide all of us in future.
