It is my great privilege to write a review on the sixth edition of fundamental of experimental pharmacology written by the eminent pharmacologist Prof. M. N. Ghosh. Dr. Ghosh has got tremendous spirit to come out with the sixth edition of the book despite many hassles due to the recent guidelines proposed by CPCSEA for carrying out animal experiments in biological sciences.
Prof. M. N. Ghosh and Dr. J. R. Vedasiromoni, both distinguished Pharmacologists, have introduced many new chapters in this current edition. At present, many pharmacological and biochemical studies are based on molecular levels, and chapter on cell line studies, as well as molecular cell biology, will be a big boon for the postgraduate and doctoral students who are pursuing their research in biomedical sciences. Currently, clinical research is taking a big stride and the chapter in this area would be of immense use for researchers in clinical sciences.
Many Pharmacologists are carrying out ambiguous research on herbal drugs without performing proper extraction procedures, and many research papers are published on the water extract of whole plants. Therefore, active ingredients of plant materials should be properly extracted with different organic solvents and active principles isolated should be characterized by the various analytical techniques viz., infrared, mass/elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. This book contains all the extraction methods and various analytical techniques essential for doing dynamic research on herbal drugs.
The book contains a chapter on alternate methods of experiments instead of research on whole animal. In this chapter, many methods such as in vitro pyrogen test, embryonic stem cell test, local lymph node assay for skin sensitization, neutral red uptake assay, carcinogenic test, acute toxicity test, and repeated toxicity test are described. These tests might become obligatory for research in various biomedical sciences due to the CPCSEA guidelines for minimizing the usage of animal experiments.
There is no meaning in doing pharmacological research without biostatical analysis. In this connection, I would like to acknowledge the authors for depicting several method of statistical analysis with suitable examples. These statistical methods written in the book will be immensely beneficial for research scholars in pharmacological and other biomedical sciences.
This book provides the fundamental knowledge on subjects varying from laboratory animals and interpretation of results though statistical analysis. The authors have attempted to include several relevant information and illustrations with suitable examples making the book compressive without making it bulky.
The overall strength of the book lies in the honest approach of these two experts. The book is written in a simple language and is also not too expensive. The current edition of this book will be useful to postgraduate students, teachers of pharmacology, and researchers working in pharmaceutical industries around the world. I congratulate Prof. M. N. Ghosh who is assisted by another pharmacologist Dr. J. R. Vedasiromoni for bringing out an excellent version of the sixth edition of Fundamentals of Experimental Pharmacology.
